Configure and install the fuse tap adapter
Tools required
- M10 wrench / Screwdriver / Pliers;
- Crimping tool or soldering iron;
- Heatshrink material or Electric tape;
- Heat gun if heatshrink material used;
Anatomy of the tap adapter
- Red Arrow: Power input, the power to both slots is delivered via this leg;
- Yellow Arrow: Slot where the "original" fuse is installed;
Original fuse is the one being replaced with the tap adapter. - Blue Arrow: Slot where the auxiliary fuse is being installed;
Your installed device is being powered via this slot.
Insert the auxiliary fuse
- This step is optional as we supply the tap adapter with pre-installed auxiliary 5A fuse;
Configure/Setup wiring harness
Connect the fuse tap adapter and O-ring terminal to the wiring harness:
- The tap adapter should be connected to the positive (typically red, occasionally other color) wire;
- O-ring terminal should be connected to the negative (typically black) wire;
Both tap adapter and O-ring should be crimped with the wires using crimping tool or soldered.
After the connections are made, it is recommended to apply either electric tape or heat shrink material.
Identify target slot in the main fuse box: Outback
- Yellow Arrow: Empty slot - #19;
Slot #19 can be used, however it is getting "hot" from time to time due to the system checks and/or EVAP system purge. This makes any equipment powered via this slot turned ON, even with the car being OFF. This may create a lot of confusion and was in the past.
Note: Non-Wilderness trims have this slot occupied with the fuse, so you'd need to take it out and insert into low slot on the tap adapter;
- Red Arrow: Occupied slot - #10;
This is the best option to use as it is always ON/OFF with the car Ignition being ON/OFF.
We strongly recommend to use this slot.
Identify target slot in the main fuse box: Forester
You can use either of the pointed slots on Forester Wilderness. The best option to use, though, would be the slot pointed with Yellow arrow.
Identify target slot in the main fuse box: Crosstrek
For the Crosstrek, please use the slot pointed with Red Arrow.
Connect O-ring terminal to the ground
With M10 wrench or socket, unscrew the nut from the bolt next to the main fuse box, put the O-ring connector on and put that nut back.
Tighten the nut to provide reliable connection.
Install the fuse tap adapter
- Take out the fuse from slot #10;
- The fuse have 7.5 marking on it.
- Insert this fuse to the low slot on the fuse tap adapter;
- Insert the fuse tap adapter into the slot #10 as demonstrated on the image;
IMPORTANT!
- If you use Slot #10, make sure the "tail" of the tap adapter is pointed toward the windshield.
If we insert the tap adapter with the "tail" pointing toward the front of the car, both the auxiliary device and the original equipment will still work, however the power delivered to our device via both fuses, in series. And we do not want that!
What we want is to SPLIT the electric current (go parallel) and deliver it to both of our circuits separately.
- If you plan to use slot #19, insert the fuse tap adapter with its "tail" pointed toward the FRONT oft he vehicle!
(send us a message if you're looking for more detail on the subject)
Verify if your device is operable
- Make sure all LEDs are connected to the wiring harness securely;
- Verify the fuse tap inserted into the designated slot as directed;
- Turn on Ignition - push the START button twice (do not push brake pedal, we're not looking to start the vehicle at this time);
- Verify LEDs are ON;
- Turn OFF ignition;
- Verify LEDs are OFF;
- Close the main fuse box cover;
- Make sure wiring harness is properly secured with zip ties. Do not make wires tight, allow some slack;
- Close the hood;
- Start your vehicle;
- DONE! ENJOY YOUR RIDE!
